My name is Avantika and I am a level II student at McMaster University majoring in life sciences, and minoring in biochemistry. Music has always played a very central role in my life. Learning and playing different instruments, singing, and song writing have all allowed me to understand the impact music can have on an individual’s mental and emotional well-being. However, it was not until I took Rachael Finnerty’s amazing class (MUSIC 2MT3), that I understood the value of music within a healthcare context. My research with the MTAcademy will primarily focus on the application of music therapy amongst neglected indigenous peoples across Canada. I hope to further uncover how music therapy could be integrated into indigenous communities, and become an accessible source of support, and alternative healthcare.
