My name is Maddy Heys, and I am a voice major in the Music Cognition specialization program at McMaster University. I plan on applying to music therapy programs for the 2020/2021 year. It is my dream to become a music therapist ever since I learned about it in grade 12. I have always had an affinity to music, and I knew that I wanted to help people in my future career. When I learned about music therapy, I was instantly drawn to it and knew that this was what I was going to pursue. I have had some snapshot exposure to music therapy over the past few years, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to get to participate in a mentorship program through the OMTA with music therapist Kristen Anderson at a long term care home. As I write this, I have only been there for one day, but I know that this is the right path for me. I am very excited to learn everything I can, and have an amazing next several months volunteering through the OMTA before I go off to school to become an accredited music therapist myself.
